General Information Chemical formulas represent substances as compounds. They include subscripts written underneath symbols for elements. Additionally, coefficients appear in the formulas for hydrates. How To See the following sections. Caveats 1. The real or apparent charge sum for a chemical compound must equal “0.” 2. A subscript only affects the element under which it appears. 3. A subscript written outside a set of parentheses, multiplies all other subscripts in the parentheses. 4. Only compound names using the Stock System contain numbers.
