A Magnet is an object which attracts pieces of iron, steel, nickel, and cobalt i.e. it applies force on these objects. It has various types.

The most common are –
1.Bar Magnet
2.Horseshoe magnet

Magnet mainly attracts Iron as well as Nickel and Cobalt.
Magnets apply force on each other.
Magnets have two poles as, North pole and south pole.
If two magnets are placed together with similar poles towards each other, then they repel each other.

It means Like poles repel.
Whereas if two poles are towards each other, then they attract.
It means unlike poles attract.

Magnetic Compass:
It is an instrument consisting of a base and a needle. The needle has a north and south tip whose north tip is painted red.
The needle gets deflected when close to the magnet and it gives the direction of the Magnetic field.
We can write it as Needle of a magnetic compass deflects in the presence of a magnet.
